Absurdity in Game Management

Letter to the Editor / Juneau Empire / March 15, 2004

"We don't care how they do it Outside" is the oft-heard phrase among self-righteous Alaskans. Yet the Alaska Board of Game has authorized the killing of moose calves because, after all, they hunt deer fawns in the Lower 48.

Nevermind the same board has just expanded its previously authorized and highly controversial wolf-control program because of declining moose numbers and is considering the control of brown bears and black bears by permitting things like brown bear baiting and the selling of bear gall bladders.

This is absurdity made even more hideous by simultaneously allowing the killing of moose calves. I hope tourists boycott Alaska in large numbers this summer and the environmental and animal-rights organizations have a field day with this. If Alaskans allow this Board of Game to proceed, we deserve the disdain and outrage of all those who live in the Lower 48.
