Save the Bears

Letters to the Editor / Fairbanks Daily News-Miner / March 15, 2004

To the Editor:

What is this state coming to? The selling of bear skulls and hides to boost moose populations? Why don't we stop selling out-of-state licenses to hunters who shoot for trophies and take their kill out of the state? This alone would boost more moose for local people.

According to this newspaper, moose travel in herds. If this is what is known about moose, then perhaps there ought to be a good lesson in moose biology and while we are there, a look at population dynamics.

Perhaps we should kill everything that could possibly pose a threat to moose. Killing the bears, one of the biggest tourists attractions for people to this state, is not going to solve the problem for dwindling moose numbers if in fact the moose numbers are dwindling. Perhaps there is over-hunting in the affected areas. Please look at this issue more scientifically before going in and killing off another creature for human gain.
