Bear Baiting

Letter to the Editor / Fairbanks Daily News-Miner / April 8, 2004

To the Editor,

Regarding your coverage of the bear-baiting controversy ("Hunters defend bear baiting," April 4), not only is the practice of luring bears with food and shooting them for sport malicious, but it hurts humans as well by contradicting the federal government's own policies that are designed to decrease the number of dangerous encounters that humans have with bears.

Habituating bears to human food increases the likelihood that campers, hikers and residents will come into conflict with them. It is time for a federal ban on this cruel and dangerous practice.
